NANJING PORT, a major barge port, in China's Yangtze River Delta region has gained a new customer, Hamsung Shipping, after it started offering cash incentives from November to attract more liners to the port.

Hamsung Shipping commenced a weekly direct service between Nanjing and Ulsan in South Korea on December 1 that is operated using a 332-TEU vessel. A report by Cargonews Asia said the new service is Nanjing's first near-ocean regular call in five years.

Citing a report by China Daily, Nanjing Port is said to already have four weekly, near-ocean direct services. Cosco operates separate services from Nanjing to Busan and Kwangyang in South Korea, plus one service to Japan. Sinokor also offers a service to Busan and Kwangyang from Nanjing.

China's Government aims to turn Nanjing Port, which is owned by the Shanghai International Port Group, into a barge hub for the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The port is expected to handle 1.4 million TEU by the end of 2010.
