Hong KONG's total port cargo throughput up 5pc in Q3 year on year to 67.8 million tonnes

HONG KONG's total port cargo throughput increased 5 per cent in the third quarter year on year to 67.8 million tonnes, according to the figures from Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department.


For the first nine months of 2010, total port cargo throughput rose 11 per cent compared to the same period last year to 197.8 million tonnes. Inward port cargo surged 12 per cent to 114.4 million tonnes, while outward port cargo grew 10 per cent to 83.4 million tonnes.


Within port cargo as a whole, seaborne cargo increased eight per cent year on year to 46.6 million tonnes, while river cargo recorded no change at 21.2 million tonnes in the third quarter.


For containers, the port of Hong Kong handled 6.2 million TEU in the third quarter of 2010, representing an increase of 11 per cent year on year. Also, laden containers went up nine per cent to 5.2 million TEU, while empty containers also increase 19 per cent to 1.0 million TEU. Among laden containers, inward containers grew 10 per cent to 2.5 million TEU, while outward containers rose 8 per cent to 2.7 million TEU.


In the first nine months of 2010, the port of Hong Kong handled 17.6 million TEU, representing an increase of 14 per cent over the same period in 2009. Laden containers rose 14 per cent to 14.9 million TEU, while empty containers increased 15% to 2.8 million TEU. Among laden containers, inward containers grew 15 per cent to 7.4 million TEU, while outward containers increase 13 per cent to 7.5 million TEU.
