TWO ships from separate African loops recently started calling at Ningbo's Meishan Island International Container Terminal, marking the launch of the first African services from the terminal, Xinhua reported.
The Nile-Singapore, is from the service jointly operated by NileDutch and NYK, carried a full load of 2,100 TEU. French carrier Delmas, carrying 1,340 TEU, operates the Hansa Augustenburg vessel.
Its rotation is Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen-Shekou, Singapore, Durban and back to Shanghai.
Meishan terminal is owned by the Ningbo Port Group, which arranged 14 vessels on Korea routes to start calling at the terminal in August after two 100,000-tonne container berths and a 75-hectare container yard became operational. The terminal now handled up to 2,200 TEU per week. The African service will contribute to its throughput growth.
According to Han Dong, operation manager from the Meishan Bonded Port Area, since the calling of China Shipping's Korea service on August 26, the terminal has received callings of 168 vessels, having handled 64,001 TEU. Its throughput is estimated to reach 120,000 TEU by the end of this year.
Meishan terminal is part of the Ningbo-Zhoushan port aggregation. As three new berths are to start construction next year, Meishan terminal's capacity will put on an extra five to six million TEU in the upcoming three years.
