To move the huge backlog of imported containers on the premises of Chennai Port Trust (ChPT), all the stakeholders have taken a decision to suspend export-related activities at the container terminals in Chennai Port for the next 78 hours from Thursday noon, reported The Hindu.
According to official sources, about 11,000 import containers have been stranded in these terminals, forcing the importers to pay storage charges.
The containers have piled up at these terminals due to the four-day flash strike by the representatives of trailer lorry owners and drivers association during the second week of November demanding better roads, followed by poor turnaround of trailers.
As a corrective measure, it was decided by all the stakeholders to stop inward movement of export containers from 12 pm on Thursday 6.00 pm on Sunday.
During this period, all the trucks will be deployed to evacuate the import containers.
