THE Port of Walvis Bay in Namibia is to be dredged from 12.8 metres to more than 14 metres to accommodate 5,000-TEU ships, or two 250-metre long vessels at the same time.
The dredging contract from the Namibian Port Authority (NamPort) for berths one, two and three has been awarded to a joint venture of Boskalis International BV and Namibia Marine Engineering Ltd, reported UK's Dredging Today based on a report by Namibian Sun.
It said the berth optimisation contract has been awarded to Stefanutti Stocks Marine, to dredge the outer entrance channel to a depth of 14.4 metres and the area adjacent to the three berths in question to a depth of 14 metres. Quay improvements to berth one and three will extend the operational length of the container terminal.
These improvements are together worth NAD100 million (US$14 million). Dredging is to be conducted around the clock to meet a strict deadline to complete the work by the end of February.
