Nov 24, 2010 Port

CHINA'S second largest port for foreign trade, Qingdao, estimated that its container throughput will exceed 12 million TEU by year's end.

The port announced on November 13 that its throughput this year had hit 300 million tonnes, one month earlier than last year, and predicted that the yearly tonnage will reach 350 million tonnes.

Qingdao said its handling efficiency broke records for eight times in the case of containers and 13 times in the case of ore shipments this year. The port authority also boasted that its 1.3 per cent of the China's quay length accounted for 6.9 per cent of the nation's tonnage.

The port said it also invested CNY2.5 billion (US$376.5 million) this year on buying or refitting technologically advanced green facilities. Since 2000, the port's throughput has more than doubled while energy consumption dropped 21.6 per cent.
