DP World shuts down cargo handling at Sydney's Port Botany

Nov 19, 2010 Port

GLOBAL terminal operator DP World has shut its ship cargo handling operations in Sydney, Australia's Port Botany to clear away a growing backlog of containers blamed on a new terminal operating system.

The system is said to have "severely" delayed truck movements, which in turn has affected all operations and caused congestion in the yard, reports London's Containerisation international.

"This shutdown is considered necessary to bring yard utilisation back to normal," said Ganesh Raj, managing director of DP World Australia. "The issues relating to the terminal operating system have taken longer to resolve than expected."

"The terminal has been disrupted for more than a week with carriers having to both adjust schedules and accelerate ships at greater expense. But so far, no congestion surcharges have been applied.
