India port volume up 12pc, despite Mumbai ship collision

DESPITE closure of India's largest box port Nhava Sheva in August following a ship collision in Mumbai, volumes surged April-October by nine per cent to 2.5 million TEU with the country's major ports up 12 per cent year on year at 4.4 million TEU.


Overall container totals for the 13 publicly-owned major ports during the seven-month period are likely to exceed last year's record volume of 4.06 million TEU, said an official of the Nhava Sheva port, reported Newark's Journal of Commerce.


Chennai experienced a strong surge during this period of 891,000 TEU, a 30.5 per cent increase year on year followed by Kolkata's increase of 9.1 per cent to 307,000 TEU, Tuticorin by 9.4 per cent to 268,000 TEU and Cochin 8.8 per cent to 197,000 TEU, according to the India Ports Association.


Throughput increased in all major ports by 0.5 per cent to 316 million tons with Kandla topping throughput at 43.9 million tons and Visakhapatnam with 38.3 million tons.
