THE Port Chongqing, on the upper navigable reaches of the Yangtze, has experienced a meteoric rise in capacity rise to 1.7 million TEU in 2009 from 55,000 TEU in 2002, making it the busiest upstream harbour from Nanjing near Shanghai, reports Xinhua.
Chongqing recently built up a number of 5,000-tonne berths in Cuntan and other port areas. Its throughput has gone up from 2002's 49 million tonnes to 115 million tonnes in 2009. The port is able to accommodate ships with average tonnage as large as 1,400 tonnes, compared to 301 tonnes in 2002.
Ninety per cent of Chongqing's foreign trade cargo is shipped on river. Transshipments from neighbouring regions account for 35 per cent of harbour throughput. Water transit takes up nearly 60 per cent of all traffic compared to 36 per cent in 2002.
