October LA-LB container volume better than expected

Nov 18, 2010 Port

THE Port of Long Beach posted a 33.5 per cent year-on-year import container volume increased in October while neighbouring Los Angeles port only increased 3.19 per cent during the same month year on year.

Yet this indicated the peak season on the transpacific had some unexpected staying power, said Newark's Journal of Commerce. Long Beach container imports were up five per cent in October over September. October imports through Los Angeles slipped seven per cent from September.

With American importers shipping their holiday merchandise early this year, August stands out as the peak of the peak season. Imports in Long Beach were down three per cent from the August peak while they were down 13 per cent through Los Angeles in the same period.

Exports had a better month in October, the busiest so far this year. In Long Beach, exports were up 26.3 per cent year on year, surpassing the nine per cent increase in May the best month of the year until now. LA exports were flat year on year, but up eight per cent month to month against September's figure.
