Chittagong Port gets back into action - under army guard

CHITTAGONG PORT has reduced vessel turnaround times to three days following the dispatch of army contingent to the port to enhance security, according to the Chittagong Port Authority secretary.


Port secretary Syed Farhad Uddin Ahmed said that out of the habours's 16 berths, half will be dedicated to general cargo and the other half to containers, according to the Dhaka Daily Star. The port handles 5,000 TEU a day, the report said.


The port official said the situation at the port is "absolutely normal," since his office began introducing steps to fulfil the demands of port workers which number 3,500. So far 2,000 of them have received ID cards and the rest will receive them soon, he said.
