MEXICO's container ports handled 2.7 million TEU in the first nine months of the year, a 33 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2009.
According to figures compiled by maritime consultant Dynamar, the majority of the country's box volume is handled at the four ports of Manzanillo and Lazaro Cardenas on the country's West Coast and Veracruz and Altamira on the East Coast.
These four ports handled 93.6 per cent of the country's throughput in the first three quarters of the year.
A report by the American Shipper said nearly two-thirds of Mexico's throughput is handled at Manzanillo and Lazaro Cardenas, which have a joint 62 per cent share.
Manzanillo's volume has grown by 40.9 per cent so far this year, and Lazaro Cardenas' by 39.2 per cent. In comparison, volume at Veracruz has risen by 21.7 per cent and at Altamira by 25.9 per cent year on year.
