Free Port of Riga's ten-month throughput is up 0.3% to 25m tons

Freight flows passing throughput the Free Port of Riga (Latvia) in January-October 2010 gained 0.3% to 25,036,000 tons, the Port Authority statistics said.

 
In ten recent months bulk cargo volume handled at the port shrank by 9.5% to 14,425,300 tons, liquid bulk cargo - by 6.6% to 5,147,600 tons, while general cargo volume surged 56.4% to 5,436,100 tons.


The Riga Port’s ten-month throughput growth was fueled by coal and petroleum products volume that rose by 38.1% and 20,4%, accordingly. The share of timber cargo was 15.2% of the total turnover, container volume – 8.4%, fertilizers - 4.6%.

 
Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava (Western Dvina) covering the total area of 6.348 ha. The length of berths – 13.818 meters, maximum draft of vessels at berth is 12.2 meters. Transit cargoes make up 80% of overall freight traffic, carried to / from the CIS countries. In 2009 the Port of Riga posted a year-over-year 0.5-percent gain to 29.72 million tons of cargo.
