Yangtze to have 2,800-kilometre water expressway to Shanghai

Nov 5, 2010 Port

CHINA's Yangtze River will build a 2,800-kilometre water express artery from Yunnan to Shanghai in five years, said Tang Guanjun, director general of Changjiang (Yangtze) River Administration of Navigational Affairs, MOT at the Mississippi-Yangtze Strategic Cooperation Forum in Chongqing, reports Xinhua.

The express artery will be created by means of a ship's fixed-line navigation channel upgrade. At present, the project is carried out in phases on the Yangtze with a 1,120-kilometre channel upgraded to handle fixed-line shipping.

The fixed-line shipping scheme started in Jiangsu in 2003, and was followed by Fengdu to Fuling section in Chongqing and Anqing to Wuhu section in Yangtze River's lower reaches. Over the next five years, the entire project will be completed to provide a direct express-artery linkage from Shuifu in Yunnan to Shanghai.
