Jakarta's clean truck scheme cracks down on older port trucks

Nov 5, 2010 Port

THE government of the Indonesian capital Jakarta plans to raid container trucks deemed unworthy to operate, in a bid to restrict truck numbers, reduce traffic and improve road safety.

The target of the swoop will be the seaport area and the streets leading to the port.

The head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency Udar Pristono said his agency has been preparing for the raids. "We do this so as the drivers of cargo carriers and heavy container trucks can comply with the prevailing rules."

The raids will include several inspections, including freight capacity, KIR, machine, and the physical condition of vehicle. "The vehicles found having less worthiness will be ticketed and must not operate until they comply with the prevailing rules," said Mr Pristono. He said that vehicles found with severe damage will be seized.

This measure comes after the Jakarta Transportation Agency's road worthiness raids on public transportation recently. So far the raids have netted 606 public transportation vehicles of which 107 were seized.
