Oakland port back at work

Sep 27, 2007 Port

Longshore workers at the Port of Oakland returned to work this morning after staging a daylong stoppage to mourn the death of a worker killed while moving a 15-ton container aboard a ship, authorities said.

Operated resumed about 8 a.m. today, said port spokeswoman Marilyn Sandifur. "All the marine operations at the Port of Oakland are open," she said. "They're up and running."

It will take five days to a week to catch up on loading operations, she said. About a dozen ships are being worked on today; each vessel has 50 workers assigned to move cargo, she said.

Reginald Ross, 39, of San Francisco, was fatally injured as the shipping container was being moved aboard the Stuttgart Express, a Hapag-Lloyd containership, about 4:30 p.m. Monday, authorities said. The cause of his death is under investigation.
