Yamato Holdings plans to start building one of the nation's largest distribution centres near Tokyo's Haneda Airport in January, according to the Daily Yomuri.
The distribution centre, which Yamato hopes to put into service in October 2012, will be in a highly convenient location, as it will be close not only to the airport but a harbour and expressways, the company said.
The project was announced shortly before Haneda resumes full-fledged international flight services for the first time in 32 years.
The total floor space of the main building will be about 170,000 sq m. Construction will cost about US$663.61 million.
Yamato plans to improve efficiency by introducing state-of-the-art machines that automatically sort freight, the company said. It also will handle an increasing amount of freight to be shipped to Asian nations.
