Following the Union government’s request, Bangladesh has agreed to grant access to its Chittagong and Mongla ports, according to Exim News Service.
This will increase economic engagements and trade between Bangladesh and the entire Eastern and North-Eastern states in India.
This was announced here by the Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Anand Sharma, after conferring with his Bangladeshi counterpart, Mr Muhammad Faruk Khan.
Earlier, since Bangladesh was not providing access to the two ports, India was building an alternative multimodal route from Mizoram to Myanmar through the river Kaladan. In this regard, India was helping Myanmar develop Sittwe port.
Delhi and Dhaka also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for establishing Haats (trading depots) along the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border.
Mr Sharma said India was currently constructing seven Integrated Checkposts and eight Land Customs Stations under a $125-million scheme.
The two sides are also holding discussions to construct a bridge across the Feni to begin trade between Sabroom and Ramgarh.
