Manila suspends import green lane

Oct 20, 2010 Port

The Bureau of Customs (BoC) has temporarily suspended the green lane color operation at the Manila International Container Port (MICP), where random checks of import shipments were conducted.

BoC-MICP district collector Ricardo Belmonte said the green lane system has been put on hold as Customs officials review it for risk management.

"Green lane is suspended because we feel that there may be some containers passing through green lane when they shouldn't be. We are trying to fix it. We'll bring it back as soon as we fix it," he said.

The BoC has adopted a color-coded scheme, or the Selectivity System, in the processing and release of shipments.

The system aims to facilitate trade and cut back on smuggling and other activities.

Shipments under the red lane or yellow lane require strict physical and document checking. These involved importers with negative track records.
