Dubai customs scans boxes, trucks moving 15 kph at Jebel Ali

Oct 18, 2010 Port

DUBAI customs has launched a container scanning system at the Jebel Ali Port using the IP6500 system that uses radioactive detection on trucks and containers to scan every 24 seconds.

The addition of four extra radioactive systems, able to scan 150 trucks per hour while moving eight to 15 kilometres an hour, will handle intensive truck traffic into its ports, reducing scanning turnover of 20 containers per hour by the loss of offloading/loading time said customs chairman Ahmed Butti Ahmed.

"Such system is the latest of its kind with a transpiercing capability for detecting containers and trucks contents and identifying banned and prohibited materials without affecting the contents of goods and food stuff," he said at a ceremony attended by US Customs and Borders Protection official Alin Persin following Dubai's partnership with the US customs Container Security Initiative (CSI).

The IP6500 system requires only a limited and small built-up area allowing to be installed in congested locations. The system will be installed in five locations across Jebel Ali Port.

The system incorporates three scanning and detection techniques starting with Optical Characteristic Recognition (OCR), which recognises the container numbers through firmed up cameras without stop or human intervention.

In the second phase, the Radiation Detection technique allows the spectroscopic radiation detection and identification, which conforms to ANSI N42.38-2006 standard for detecting radioactive substances and relocates them in the container.

Phase three of the container scanning process includes High-energy X-ray to allow the inspection officer to view contents of the container or truck without opening the container or halting the truck.

The new system of five gates will be operated by UAE national officers and require 80 inspectors on a shift basis round the clock.
