PORT of Panjin, on Dalian side of the Gulf of Chihli, across the Liao River from one of China's oldest ports, Yingkou (pop 2.2 million), is opening up its own port at a cost of CNY20 billion (US$3 billion), reports Xinhua.

Run by Yingkou Port Group and the Panjin municipal government, the new harbour is in the Liaobin coastal economic zone of Liaoning province, covering 40 square kilometres, and can accommodate 60 berths and more than 50,000 tonnes with an eventual capacity of 100 million tonnes.

Su Guoxiang, a senior official of the City of Panjin (pop 1.2 million) said the port had easy access to transport and is the nearest for trade cargo from central Liaoning and its surrounding hinterland.
