A 10-year operating lease has been awarded to SeaFreight Agencies for a new 25 acre (10 ha) terminal facility in Port Everglades. SeaFreight will be the first tenant at the nearly completed 43 acre container yard in the port's Southport area.
SeaFreight currently operates eight container ships at Port Everglades with twice weekly fixed-day sailings to and from the Caribbean region. During its 18 years as a Port Everglades customer, the company has relied on other terminal operators to handle its cargo which has grown by 89% since 2004.
For Port Everglades, the guaranteed value of the SeaFreight agreement, including rent, will grow from US$2,41m to $4,13m over the lease period. The port expects volume guarantees will exceed current cargo levels by 23% within the first six years.
In other news, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has awarded a US$750,000 grant to Port Everglades for diesel emissions reduction through the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Clean Diesel Campaign. The port is also contributing US$510,000 to emissions reduction projects at the port.
The grant will fund the purchase and installation of diesel emissions reduction equipment for on-road and off-road equipment, replacement of old generators, forklifts, and service vehicles. Other port projects include retrofitting diesel cargo handling equipment with newer emissions reduction technology and repowering diesel boats with more efficient, cleaner burning engines.
