Government plans to move ports from the inner parts of Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City to outlying areas have stalled because of delays in infrastructure construction at the proposed new sites as well as a lack of funds, port management officials have said.
The city planned to move four ports: Sai Gon, Sai Gon New, Vegetable Terminal and Tan Thuan Dong, although only one of them, Sai Gon New Port, will now complete its move, officials have said. Moving the other three could take several more years.
According to an official with the Vietnam Ports Association - who welcomed the move as “a good thing” - the problem is not so much money as the lack of infrastructure and related road and rail links.
