South Boston's Conley Container Terminal has taken delivery of two low-profile ship-to-shore cranes and four rubber-tyre gantries (RTG) from the Oakland's former AP Moller-Maersk Terminals (APMT) facilities there, according to the Shipping Gazette.
Low-profile cranes are needed because the Boston terminal is under the flight path of a Logan Field runway, reports American Shipper. The US$15 million purchase brings the number of cranes on the Conley docks to six and Rags to 12. The acquisition is part of a modernisation ahead of the expansion of the Panama Canal in 2015, which will enable more and larger ships to call at Boston.
The Massachusetts Port Authority (Mass port) announced the US$15 million acquisition in early August. The price includes the cost of transport and installation.
Ports America has replaced APMT as the terminal operator of berths 20-24 in Oakland and it is upgrading equipment and facilities under its 50-year concession.
