FRENCH transport workers protesting the government's recent decision to increase the retirement age from 60 to 62 went on strike, stopping throughput at container terminals at Mediterranean and Channel ports.
The one-day strike marked the second this month, which saw container operations at Le Havre and Marseilles come to a halt, reported London's International Freighting Weekly, adding that it also prompted the government to make conciliatory changes to its pension reform bill.
But unions said the changes were not enough. One union, the militant Solidaires Unitaires Democratiques (SUD), has urged truckers to back a long strike.
