THE Port of Houston Authority announced that in the first seven months of the year the facility handled one million TEU on operating revenues of US$104.5 million.
Container tonnage was up eight per cent compared with the same period in 2009. But steel tonnage was down 39 per cent.
"Containers arriving and departing from the port are full, a good sign that exports and imports are increasing," said a port spokesman. "Steel volume also reflects whether more bridges, buildings and homes are being constructed.
"The real vibrancy of this recovery will be measured by the last six months of this year."
Port commissioners have also agreed to spend US$66,000 on a surveillance camera to be installed on a Bayport Container Terminal crane, to improve operations visibility at Bayport's wharf, reports the Houston Chronicle.
Port officials will also propose holding the annual American Association of Port Authorities conference in Houston in 2014, the same year as the Houston Ship Channel's 100th anniversary.
