Freight flows via Liepaja Port rise 0.3% in Jan-Aug to 2,7m tons

Cargo turnover of the port of Liepaja (Latvia) in January-August 2010 increased by 0,3% compared with the same period last year, to 2.728 million tons, PortNews IAA reports citing the Port Authority data.

 
Eight-month volume of handled grain fell 26.6% to 805.700 tons, while lumber volume surged by 2.2 times as much, to 646.200 tons, transshipment of crude oil shrank nearly 35% to 80,900 tons, petroleum products volume increased by 40% to 277.400 tons (including 38.300 tons of diesel fuel), ferrous metals dropped by 5.8%, to 305,800 tons, the Port’s statistics said.

Port of Liepaja was founded in the 90-ies last century at the former USSR’s naval base. Today Liepaja ranks the third port of Latvia by its cargo turnover. Half of its freight traffic volume is fueled by crude oil and bulk cargoes imported from the CIS countries, largely from Belorussia. In 2009 the port’s throughput increased by 4.6%, to 4.38 million tons.
