Sep 8, 2010 Port

Xiamen Port and Zhangzhou Port were integrated on August 31 and are being called Xiamen Port, reported China Daily.

The Xiamen Port authority is now in charge of both ports. The new Xiamen Port will be an international shipping hub for container traffic and bulk cargo.

Yu Weiguo, municipal party secretary of Xiamen indicated: "The integration of the two ports breaks administrative restrictions and realises scientific and optimised developments of the region."

The harbour districts of former Zhangzhou Port, Gulei, Dongshan, Yunxiao and Zhaoan merged into Xiamen Port, which is now made up of 12 harbour districts. Yu added that the integration of port resources within the same bay is conducive to taking advantage of resources to promote the rapid development of the provincial shipping business with more visible effects.

Accordingly, all of the favourable treatments enjoyed by the former Xiamen Port in terms of taxes, duties, allowances and Customs will be extended to all districts of the former Zhangzhou Port. All of the port enterprises in Xiamen, Zhangzhou and the development zone of Zhangzhou will participate in the investment in the new port combination.

The harbour districts of Zhaoyin, Houshi and Shima of former Zhangzhou Port merged into Xiamen Port as early as 2006. The Fujian provincial government is carrying out its urbanisation plan in the coastal harbour districts. The main functions of the port includes international passenger liners and roll-on vessels, passenger ships as well as high-end shipping services for Taiwan.
