VISAKHAPATNAM's Visakha Container Terminal Private Ltd (VCTPL), half way up India's east coast, has two ordered rail mounted quay cranes for INR1.2 billion (25.5 million) from Finland's Kone Cranes as part of its Phase II expansion.
The terminal also signed another agreement earlier with Kone for the supply of four rubber tyre gantry cranes (RTGS), reports Mumbai's Business Standard.
The cranes would be supplied in the next 16 months. The gantry cranes will have a lifting capacity of 41 tonnes and will raise the terminal's capacity to 300,000 TEU.
In other news, Maersk Line is starting a weekly service from Visakhapatnam to China. The port rotation for this service will be: Shanghai, Shenzhen-Yantian, Tanjung Pelepas, Port Klang, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Tanjung Pelepas and back to Shanghai.
The journey time between Shanghai and Visakhapatnam will be 15 days. The first call at Visakhapatnam is expected on September 29.
The service will also be extended to Kolkata/Haldia by transhipping the containers at Vizag. Container movements between Kolkata/Haldia and Vizag will be through feeder vessels, the report added.
