London Thamesport is celebrating a record 25% of inland import containers being moved by rail during July, setting a new record in terms of multimodal share and the highest handled at the London port since 2008.
“We take the effect our operations have on the environment very seriously and are constantly striving to reduce the impact we cause,” said David Gledhill, CEO for Hutchison Ports (UK), which owns London Thamesport.
“We are dedicated to transporting as many containers as possible by rail, thus easing pressure on the country’s road network and reducing both our carbon footprint and that of our customers.”
With weekly services to Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester, reaching this record has been put down to the port achieving better utilisation of trains and the addition of a fourth service to Bristol.
In a statement the port said that rail volumes are due to remain at high levels for the coming months, with further record-breaking volumes possible in the busy period running up to Christmas.
