Rotterdam sees boxes as biggest growth area for 20 years

Aug 26, 2010 Port

THE Port of Rotterdam Authority expects cargo throughput could jump from around 420 million tons at present to 575 million tons and to 740 million tons by 2030.

On the basis of three different economic scenarios, the port authority has made throughput estimates covering 20 years, reports the American Shipper. The port said these projections form the basis for its Port Vision 2030.

Port authorities said that while volumes differ in each scenario, all foresee containers as the leading growth sector. Raw materials show limited growth or even decreases, while semi-manufactured products, such as mineral oil products and steel, are expected to rise.

Upcoming developments in the energy field are expected to have a big influence on throughput volumes. In the most sustainable scenario, for example, it believes transhipment of biomass and LNG could grow sharply, while crude oil throughput would drop.
