With rebound, PierPass terminals to resume weekend, night work

Aug 24, 2010 Port

BECAUSE of the global container rebound, LA-Long Beach's PierPass organisation, has said that 11 of the 13 terminals will open a fifth off-peak shift by September 8 and start working weekends again.

PierPass, representing LA-LB terminal operators, was first established in southern California to administer the so-called OffPeak programme which called the group to collect a fee on cargo moving through terminal gates during the normal working week, with the money going to offset costs of operating four weekday night shifts and one weekend shift.

But with box LA-LB box volumes falling last year, the terminals cut back on the weekend shift. With today's volumes rebounding, most terminals will reinstate that shift, reported American Shipper. As well, PierPass said when a Thursday OffPeak gate is closed for stop work meetings by the longshore union, the terminals will add an extra Friday OffPeak gate the following day.
