THE South Carolina State Ports Authority has settled a three-year law suit with Coastal Conservation League that sought to stop the new container terminal development and its access road in North Charleston.
The settlement calls for the authority to monitor and reduce air pollution from port operations and launch a voluntary programme to replace 85 per cent of port trucks that predate 1994 by 2014. It also calls for consideration for rail access at the new terminal.
The primary defendant in the complaint is the Army Corps of Engineers, which issued the permit for the port expansion. The SPA later intervened in the lawsuit and was named as a defendant, reports the Charleston Post and Courier.
