Aug 3, 2010 Port

Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) has awarded a contract to the ED Zublin AG and Al Jaber Transport & General Contracting joint venture for the detailed design, construction, fit-out, testing and commissioning of the new offshore Khalifa Port & Industrial Zone (KPIZ) project with work to begin immediately.

Highlights of the contract include the construction of 23 buildings and associated structures, including the Terminal Operations Building, more than 1,000m of quay wall and a 5.4km dual carriageway linking the offshore port to the mainland with associated service roads, street lighting and two helipads.

Located midway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, KPIZ is scheduled to commence operations in 2012 and when all phases are completed in 2030, it will comprise a world-class multi-purpose offshore port consisting of 420 sq kms of industrial land organised into vertically integrated clusters for aluminium, petrochemicals, glass, paper and other major sectors –one of the largest in the world.

Khalifa Port will replace Abu Dhabi’s existing main port of Mina Zayed and will have an initial capacity of 2m and 9m tons of general cargo. When all phases of Khalifa Port are completed in 2030, it will have a capacity of 15m teu and 35m tons of general cargo.
