MALAYSIA's Transport Minister Seri Kong Cho Ha has revealed plans to turn the low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) into an air cargo terminal to increase the capacity of the KL International Airport's (KLIA) cargo warehouse by 320,335 tons a year.
The minister said that with the change, the overall cargo capacity at the KLIA would increase to 1.32 tonnes annually, reports Bernama.
"The increased capacity will be able to meet the requirement of companies which have shown an interest to use the terminal," he was quoted as saying.
"The terminal's design is for temporary use for the operations of the low-cost carrier to meet its current needs," the minister said in response to questions.
The LCCT was built in 2005 and began operations in March 2006 with a capacity of 10 million passengers annually before being upgraded to 15 million passengers annually. Last year, however, the terminal reached its maximum capacity when it handled 13.1 million passengers.
The construction of the MYR2.5 billion (US$784.06 million) permanent LCCT began at the end of 2009 and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2012 with an annual passenger capacity of 30 million, the report added.
