Conference on NoMEPorts

Apr 24, 2008 Port

The final conference concerning the European NoMEPorts project will take place on April 24 and 25. NoMEPorts stands for Noise Management in European Ports, and aims to reduce noise pollution in ports. From its launch in 2005, eleven European ports have been working together to map out the noise pollution and to conceive measures to bring down noise levels. The result is the “Good Practice Guide on Port Area Noise Mapping and Management,” which will be presented to the European Commission, with the aim of turning the proposals into European legislation.

The project’s objective was to calculate, find and otherwise obtain the correct information relating to noise impact; to draw up so-called noise maps and to make action plans aimed at decreasing the noise levels in and around ports. Of course, the ultimate aim is to reduce the noise impact on the residents living near the ports.

In 2005, the Port of Amsterdam initiated the project, which will now be winded down on April 24 and 25 with a major conference in Amsterdam.

Ronald Prins, Managing Director of the Environmental & Building Department of the City of Amsterdam, will be presented with a copy of “The Good Practice Guide on Port Area Noise Mapping and Management.”

This project has brought together large and small ports, Cardiff University, the DGMR engineering consultancy and the EcoPorts Foundation. The participating ports are Livorno, Hamburg, Copenhagen/Malmo, Civitavecchia, Valencia, Rotterdam, Bremen, Goteborg, Tenerife, Oslo and Amsterdam.

The end-of-the-project conference will take place on April 24 and 25 at the Mövenpick Hotel, Piet Heinkade 11 in Amsterdam.
