CP Rail strikes deals with Vancouver container terminals

Jul 8, 2010 Port

THE Canadian Pacific Railway has signed agreements with three container terminals at Port Metro Vancouver in a bid to raise productivity and performance and attract more business as competition mounts from rival US ports, reports London's Containerisation International.

The agreements with TSI Terminal Systems, a subsidiary of Global Terminals, and with DP World, follow similar recent moves by rival Canadian National Railway.

TSI manages the Deltaport and Vanterm box facilities, which handle more than 70 per cent Vancouver throughput, while the Centerm terminal in the inner harbour is part of DP World's global network.

"This agreement moves us down the path of a high performance, efficient and reliable supply chain," said Michael Moore, president and CEO of Global Container Terminals. "We will measure performance changes, share best practices, and work cooperatively towards growth for the benefit of our mutual customers."

According to CP president and CEO Fred Green collaboration between terminal operators and CP from 2001 to 2008 resulted in "a 229 per cent increase in loaded import containers through Canada's Asia-Pacific Gateway terminals in Vancouver."
