THE cargo volume moved by the airport's No 1 ground handler, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl), grew 38.4 per cent year on year in the first six months to 1,389,059 tons, the company announced.

Second quarter results showed a 39.1 per cent year-on-year increase to 752,316 tons, and the monthly June figure shows a 30.5 per cent increase to 245,352 tons.

First-half exports at 752,830 tons were up 46.4 per cent year on year. Half-yearly exports to China increased 48.8 per cent, and grew 45.7 per cent to Europe and by 45.5 per cent to the US over the previous year.

Overall imports in the same period grew 35.4 per cent to 366,204 tons, with imports from Europe increasing 33.6 per cent and up 56.7 per cent from the US.

Transshipment traffic surged 23.2 per cent in the first six months to 270,025 tons.

"While we are delighted to see the continued strong tonnage growth brought by the better-than-expected economic recovery in the first half of the year, we remain cautious over the global economy's long-term growth prospects as the looming European debt crisis and the uncertainties in the US's economic growth continue to pose impacts to cargo traffic around the globe," said Hactl marketing and customer services general manager Lilian Chan.
