THE cargo volume moved by the airport's No 1 ground handler, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl), grew 38.4 per cent year on year in the first six months to 1,389,059 tons, the company announced.

Second quarter results showed a 39.1 per cent year-on-year increase to 752,316 tons, and the monthly June figure shows a 30.5 per cent increase to 245,352 tons.

First-half exports at 752,830 tons were up 46.4 per cent year on year. Half-yearly exports to China increased 48.8 per cent, and grew 45.7 per cent to Europe and by 45.5 per cent to the US over the previous year.

Overall imports in the same period grew 35.4 per cent to 366,204 tons, with imports from Europe increasing 33.6 per cent and up 56.7 per cent from the US.

Transshipment traffic surged 23.2 per cent in the first six months to 270,025 tons.

"While we are delighted to see the continued strong tonnage growth brought by the better-than-expected economic recovery in the first half of the year, we remain cautious over the global economy's long-term growth prospects as the looming European debt crisis and the uncertainties in the US's economic growth continue to pose impacts to cargo traffic around the globe," said Hactl marketing and customer service manager Lilian Chan.

The air cargo handler's second-quarter exports grew 49.4 per cent year on year to 414,384 tons while imports jumped 29.9 per cent to 191,635 tons. Transshipment traffic in the same period was up 26.3 per cent to 146,297 tons.

In June, exports amounted to 134,138 tons, up 38.6 per cent year on year while imports grew 27.2 per cent to 65,056 tons. Transshipments grew 15.3 per cent year on year to 46,158 tons.
