First Liebherr LPS 500 portal mobile harbour crane for Antwerp

Jul 2, 2010 Port

DP World Antwerp has commissioned its first rail mounted Liebherr portal mobile harbour crane (LPS 500). The portal, which provides significant space saving, particularly on narrow quays, has a rail span of 11 m, allowing road trucks and even two trains to pass next to each other beneath it.

According to Liebherr, with a lift capacity of up to 104 tonnes and a maximal outreach of 51 m, the crane is ideal for handling transhipment traffic at multipurpose terminals like DP World Antwerp. In addition to the on-board diesel-hydraulic power transmission system, the crane is equipped with an electric motor and a cable to offer the customer the option of either operating the crane from an existing high voltage network or independently of any shore supply.

Liebherr mobile harbour cranes offer the unique Sycratronic synchronising crane control system® which allows two Liebherr units to be operated simultaneously by one crane driver for improved crane operation, speed and safety.

Before the final handover, the LPS 500 had to pass a 48-hours endurance test. The obligatory technical requirements of DP World demanded a 98%-reliability. “We had not one second of downtime in 48 hours: this was the best equipment performance test we ever had,” said Robby Van Bunder, DP World Antwerp’s technical manager.
