SINGAPORE Changi Airport has registered total cargo movements in May of 153,098 tons, a 14.7 per cent year-on-year increase, authorities have announced.
For the first five months of 2010, airfreight movements were up 17.3 per cent to 728,794 tonnes.
In May, Changi also registered its highest growth in passenger traffic year-to-date handling almost 3.39 million passenger movements during the month, a 21.6 per cent increase compared to May 2009.
This takes the total number of passenger movements for the first five months of the year to more than 16.6 million, an increase of 16.7 per cent year on year.
Passenger growth was broad based with all regions seeing higher traffic compared to May 2009. North America registered the strongest year on year growth of 43 per cent, followed by traffic to North East Asia at 34 per cent. A government statement said south east Asia and South Asia also performed well, registering growth of more than 20 per cent.
Airlines that added or started new services in May included Indonesia AirAsia (to Jakarta and Bali), Jetstar Asia (to Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh and Penang), Silkair (to Bangalore) and Singapore Airlines (to Hong Kong).
As of June 1, Changi Airport served 88 airlines operating 5,070 weekly scheduled flights to more than 200 cities in 60 countries and territories.
