The US$7 billion New Doha Port Project took another big step forward with the Qatar Chamber of Commerce (QCC) and Industry receiving earlier in the week the master plan for the project from Worley Parsons Qatar, architects and engineers, and AECOM, project management consultants, at the Chamber premises, the Qatar Tribune reported.
The new port, to be constructed near Messaied Industrial City, will become operative by 2015. When complete, it will replace the existing port, which faces too much congestion. The new port would be designed in such a way that it would provide maximum connectivity to industrial areas, said Fred Bicker, project manager of Worley Parsons Qatar.
The new Doha port is being constructed with an eye on the future too. It will be able to accommodate growth till 2030 and will be equipped with modern, environment- friendly technology with solar power used for various operations.
This project will be bigger than the New Doha International Airport Project. In the beginning, the port will have the capacity to handle two million containers annually, which can be expanded to sex million containers, depending on the demand.
The port will have a core terminal, cargo terminal, port marine services, container terminal and cruise terminal.
