SHARJAH PORT handled 23 per cent more container traffic from January to May compared to the same period last year, and the terminal operator expects to post double-digit increases in container volume this year.
Gulftainer, the UAE-based port operator, cited quicker turnaround times for their success.
The company said it handled 1.25 million containers in the first five months of the year, a volume that puts the port on track to post double-digit volume growth, said a report by Dubai-based online business magazine, Kippreport.
The increases follow a 10 per cent rise in container traffic last year, compared with 2008 traffic.
Gulftainer handled 2.75 million TEU in 2009, primarily at Khorfakkan Port on the UAE's east coast and at Khalid Port in Sharjah.
