Karawang Port to be operational in 2020

Jun 25, 2010 Port

Port Operator (Pelindo) II plans to start operations at the 10,000-hectare Karawang Port and Container Terminal in West Java in 2020, Bisnis Indonesia reported.

President director of Pelindo II RJ Lino revealed the target was fixed after Tanjung Priok port, North Jakarta, was deemed no longer able to handle the surge in exported and imported goods from Jakarta.

"Starting in 2020, flow of containers will be directed to Karawang port to replace Tanjung Priok," he said.

He added that the company would hold a limited tender to seek a strategic global partner to develop the port and container terminal in Karawang.

Lino explained the creation of a partnership with a global shipping company was part of a strategy to make the new port in Karawang a transhipment hub port with the commitment for direct calls from and to the port.

The port will have a capacity of 10 million TEUs per annum.
