CONTAINER volume handled by the Port of Hampton Roads has increased 14.2 per cent to 161,535 TEU in May year on year, according to the Virginia Port Authority.
For the first five months of the year, the number of containers passing through the port rose 12.5 per cent from the same period in 2009 to 779,969 containers.
"This trend of our cargo getting better is in keeping with what we're seeing around the nation; the cargo is slowly coming back," Joe Harris, spokesman for the Virginia Port Authority told the Virginian-Pilot, the local Hampton Roads daily. "The numbers are improving; everybody is real hesitant to say we're out of the woods, but it gives you reason to be optimistic."
The Port of Savannah handled 239,743 containers in April, a 23.7 per cent increase from a year earlier. New York/New Jersey moved 330,677 laden TEU, a 17.4 per cent increase from a year earlier.
