Jun 24, 2010 Port

THE French ports of Le Havre, Rouen and Paris on the River Seine attended the Transport Logistics China 2010 exhibition and together promoted themselves to Chinese customers.

China is the major trading partner of Le Havre in containers. Container traffic between the two accounts for 75 per cent of total French box volume. Last year, Le Havre handled 550,000 TEU to and from China alone.

The Seine Axis port complex, the largest in France, handles more than a million tonnes a year. It has a total of 2.5 million square metres of warehouse space, 25 million consumers within a radius of 200 kilometres and 200 million consumers within 600 kilometres.

The port complex area has a sea and river cargo traffic of 128 million tonnes. There are six river transport operators providing regular container shipping services between the three ports with 10 carriers providing connections to 14 ports in China.

The port complex has a competitive edge in providing comprehensive logistics services. The distribution facilities along the Seine River make possible of daily connection between the port of Le Havre and eight multimodal platforms - Radicatel, three terminals in Rouen, Limay, Gennevilliers, Bonneuil-sur-Marne and Nogent-sur-Seine.

Another advantage of the Seine lies in the efficiency of document and customs processing, owing to the AP+ information system, developed by SOGET, a public private partnership between Port of Le Havre Authority, Port of Le Havre Community and customs, and also because the terminals of Le Havre, Rouen and Gennevilliers are inter-connected. This one-stop system is also connected with customs and ensures the immediate release of cleared goods.

The Port of Le Havre is a major harbour in western Europe and also the largest for foreign trade and container trade in France, accounting for 63 per cent of box traffic in the country. The port has 10 daily calls by large containerships from all continents, and boasts of a rail network covering all parts of the European continent and river services to Paris and environs.
