THE UK's Felixstowe container port, owned by Hong Kong's Hutchison Ports UK, has taken delivery of three 2,000-ton ship-to-shore gantry cranes for its new deepwater container terminal.
The cranes were built by Zhenhua Port Machinery Company and transported intact from its Shanghai plant to Felixstowe.
The cranes can lift two containers simultaneously with a combined weight of 70 tons and will be able to handle mega containerships with 24 boxes across.
Hutchison Ports UK chief executive David Gledhill said the new Felixstowe South terminal "is quickly becoming a reality."
Felixstowe South is the only deep water container terminal fully committed in the UK and comes at a time when an increasing number of ultra-large containerships are coming into service, Mr Gledhill was quoted as saying in a report by Newark's Journal of Commerce. "It is essential for UK shippers and receivers that we have the facilities to accommodate these mega ships and Felixstowe South gives us that."
