11 June 2010 (Container Management Magazine)

Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) Terminal Catalunya S.A. (TERCAT) will shortly take over the site of the Muelle Prat container terminal from the Barcelona Port Authority to enable construction to commence.

Phase I will feature a 1,000 m long quay, eight super post-Panamax quay cranes with outreaches of 22 containers, a yard area of approximately 60 hectares, 18 container stacking blocks with 36 one-over-five automated stacking yard cranes (ASC), a fleet of shuttle carriers, tractors and trailers, an eight-track rail terminal, and administration and engineering buildings. The Muelle Prat container terminal will be installed with an automated terminal operating system called nGen, developed by HPH.

The quay cranes and ASCs are being supplied by ZPMC and KoneCranes respectively and five cranes have already been built at ZPMC’s Shanghai plant.

After a series of qualification assessments and requests for tenders in accordance with EU procurement rules, five contractors submitted their bids for the civil works tender on April19, 2010 and TERCAT is in the process of reviewing the tenders. A decision is expected in July, and the contract will be awarded before construction begins in the third quarter of 2010.

The new terminal will have an annual handling capacity of 1.5m teu. The first berth is expected to commence commercial operations in late 2011/early 2012 after a short period of testing and commissioning of the container handling equipment and the terminal operating system.
