NIGERIAN ports and harbours face a national strike by the dockers union over payments for offshore work done for Shell, Chevron-Texaco, Agip Energy & Natural Resources, Hyundai Heavy Industry, Mobil and Esso.
Some 25 companies are said to be involved in the dispute with Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), whose president, Anthony Emmanuel, has issued an ultimatum to the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to settle the dispute and secure payment, reports London's Containerisation International.
"At the expiration of two weeks, if the NPA management fails to prevail on the firms to pay, ports across the country would be shut down," said Mr Emmanuel.
"The continued denial of the payment to a suffering class of workers, some of whom have died while waiting for the payment, is inhuman and unacceptable," he said.
