China’s Port Industry showed a clear sign of recovery at the end of 2009. Therefore, port operators are seeking solutions to secure future growth, in order to stand out after the economic crisis. Port of Qingdao is one of the largest ports in China. As part of a joint venture, Qingdao invested 1.4 billion dollars in the fourth stage of Qianwan Harbor, which included 10 deep-water berths and expansion of the total dock length to 3,408 meters. More than 50 billion dollars is to be invested in Dongjiakou Harbor, one of the two largest accessory harbors at Qingdao Port.
Noppen's 2nd Annual China Port Expansion and Efficiency Summit, co-organized by Qingdao Dongjiakou Port, took place on 27th – 28th May in Qingdao, China. Supported by the International MultiModal Transport Association (IMMTA), the International Association of Ports & Harbors (IAPH) and the American General Business Association, this event brought together 70 of the most prestigious leaders from the port industry to explore solutions for port long-term growth and to update on the latest port expansion schemes.
From the Integrated Transport Department, NDRC, Researcher Sun Wei was Chairman of the event. She gave a very informed presentation on Chinese Port’s development and the 12th-5 Prospective. Influential speakers at the event were Bao Qifan, Vice President, Shanghai International Port Group who spoke about Green Port research and development at the Port of Shanghai and Tian Hong, Vice President, Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co. Ltd (ZPMC) who presented a case study on energy-saving and environmentallyfriendly automatic container terminal handling systems.
Prof. Sun Guangqi, Director and Professor at the Ports and Shipping Research Institute, Dalian Maritime University introduced the concept of Fourth-Generation Ports and described their evaluation criteria. It helped delegates gain an understanding about future developments in China. On the evening of day one a panel discussion was held giving an overview of the day's speeches, followed by the panelists, who came from the China Ports and Harbors Association, IMC China, the Science and Technology Facilitating Commission of Shanghai Municipality and Rizhao Port Co Ltd, sharing their experiences on going ‘Green’. Port of Shanghai: “With pressure from the government policy, we are all very concerned about the application of Green Port in China. This conference gave us a great platform to share our experience and discuss problems.”
Other notable speakers at the event were Percy Osterstrom, CEO, Osterstroms & MultiDocker who presented on improved port efficiency through Green Technology; Manoj Kumar, Sr. Business Development Leader, ArcelorMittal Singapore spoke on steel sheet piling and ArcelorMittal’s leadership in foundation solutions; and from the China Ports and Harbors Association, Guo Yu talked about Green Port for sustainable development. China Communications Water Transportation Planning and Design Institute Co Ltd: “The topics discussed at the conference were excellent. It is the future trend of Chinese Port development. The conference was well organized.” Larmor: “It was encouraging to learn that the environmental issues are getting increasing priority in Chinese Port planning.”
On the afternoon of day two 30 delegates participated in a tour to the construction site of the biggest ore terminal in China at Dongjiakou Port. The tour was conducted by Zhang Hao, Deputy General Manager at Qingdao Port Investment and Construction Group. Comments from the event include, China Communications Construction: “Great level of guidance for port construction”, Port of Rizhao: “Well organized event, we’ve learned a lot” and Port of Tianjin: “The information is extremely valuable for future port development.”
